To maximize space usage, the original layout, which consisted of four rooms and two master bedrooms, has been transformed into three rooms and a single master bedroom. Additionally, a study has been added to provide more flexibility for the family members. The entryway and public area are seamlessly connected through the use of the same materials, creating a continuous and smooth transition between spaces.
The design features a unique spinout-shaped kitchen area, which serves as the centerpiece of the structure. This innovative design not only brings family members together but also breaks through the limitations of traditional layouts, creating an expansive spatial feeling.
The living room, study, and dining room are all designed with an open-end method, allowing for a seamless flow between these areas. This design approach enhances the overall functionality of the space and creates a sense of openness and connectivity.
One of the standout features of The Hulking Mist is the use of materials and colors. The overall design is characterized by simple colors such as grey, white, earth tones, and grey-blue, which serve as the design core. Blue artistic tiles are strategically placed throughout the wall behind the dining table, creating an ocean-like scenery that adds a touch of serenity to the space.
During lighting design, natural daylight is prioritized, and ceiling-embedded lighting fixtures are used to spread light throughout the residence. This not only enhances the overall ambiance but also highlights the connection between the interior and the surrounding natural environment.
The cabinets in the public area are paired with marble countertops that are embedded with simulated fireplaces, adding a touch of luxury and vacation-like atmosphere to the space. The use of vintage-like metals, clay, and blue artistic tiles further enhances the overall aesthetic appeal.
The Hulking Mist project faced several challenges, including the narrow and long space. However, these challenges were overcome by incorporating transparent window sceneries to infuse the traffic flow with natural lighting arrangements. The semi-open-end spatial design connects the dining table, living room, and kitchen island, providing flexibility and maximizing the usage of the public area.
The Hulking Mist is a testament to the designer's creativity and attention to detail. By combining innovative spatial arrangements, a harmonious color palette, and a deep connection with nature, Pei Lin Hsieh has created a residential design that offers both functionality and a serene vacation-like atmosphere.
The Hulking Mist project was completed in November 2020 in Xindian District, New Taipei City. It is a prime example of how thoughtful design can transform a space and create a harmonious connection with the natural surroundings.
